Tried to get an alignment

So this morning I went to get an alignment done and the guy told me that he couldn't do it because my steering gear box has alot of play in it. He showed me what he was talking about and the shaft that connects to the pitman are moves around alot in the box. I am just wondering how hard it is to change a steering box. It looks pretty straight forward. Do i need any special tools? I know i would need a pitman arm puller.

No, Pretty straight forward. I replaced mine no problem. You probably would want to flush your power steering while you at it. And check your PS pump maybe it needs to be replaced as well.
That said, you sure it doesn't just need adjusting?
There's an adjuster nut on top of the box, to make your steering wheel tighter or looser...

I have no idea, I didn't even know there was a nut on top. I will check that next. Thanks

there is a procedure in adjusting it, its a progressive rate so you dont want to make it too tight (ie fine on center, will get REALLY tight, possibly bind at its limits)

Getting the pitman arm off can be a major PITA.

Yea. When we put a 5in lift on my dads dodge. That was the hardest part of the lift getting that damn thing off.
