Moving HVAC panel in favor of a DVD player?
well....unfortunately.....the ZJ dash doesn't permit a flip up DVD player in stock form. I had one in my white '99 XJ Classic, which was great for long trips, plus it's iPod compatible for my 80gig iFlop. I haven't found much info on how to do this, only pix. i pulled the HVAC panel & stereo out the other day, everything looks like there's enough room, and I can make some sort of mounting plate to make it all fit. Wiring is the and getting around the HVAC ducts are the issues...
There's gotta be someone on here that's either done this, or knows of a write up.

Maybe you can put the HVAC panel back above the ducts, where the factory stereo was originally?

that's what i'm trying to do. the dash is stock right now, i test fitted everything the other day, everything will fit the opposite ways....but i don't know how I'm going to get around the HVAC ducts for the wiring. i don't see any holes to stick the wiring through or around.

ive seen it done.. there is space if you pull the instrument cluster you can gain access along that side.. you might just need to cut away the metal shroud behind the plastic instruments.. last i remeber was people had to extend like 40 wires but it worked.. i just didnt want to have the hassle.. i got one of the ebay units that has the screen below the deck.. its kinda junk with radio and has a slow input etc..
Another option is to space the deck out from the dash it doesnt look bad i have mine spaced from the dash slightly.. and i just wrapped the metal sleeve that you mount in the dash kit with electrical tape.. but remember i have 5% windows so its kinda dark in there to start with..

since I didn't find crap for info, I just used my intellect, dove in and did it! I made a custom mounting plate for the HU out of 1/4" ABS plastic, cut up the aftermarket stereo mounting plate for use with the HVAC panel, went to the junk yard to clip a HVAC & radio harnesses from a C4C '97 Limited. I didn't need to extend the radio harnesses & antenna wire ( they are plenty long), found a small hole for the radio wires on the right side. took the radio harnesses apart, fed each wire through one by one. found a small hole on the left and clipped my HVAC harness one by one, while feeding the '97 harness down one wire at a time so i didn't get them crossed.

How far away does the screen come away from the rest of the panel?
What DVD player did you get?

that looks to be a Jensen model.... which doesn't come out as far as the Kenwood model does.... You can also program/set the kenwood to come out at a specified distance and tilt.
I like how this looks... but you would have to retract to change a heater/ac setting.... |

Yeah, but that's the beauty of the auto temp control. You don't have to be constantly playing with it.

If either of those could be programed to come out 3" it would clear the dash pad on my ZJ. I wonder if the older ZJ's dash have less of an overhang than the latter ones?

you can physically mount the stereo out from the dash but then you have a screen way up for everyone to see i like that the stereo is down lower.. i would sell my 8inch screen and get something like this..

I wonder why more "brand name" manufacturers don't make a screen that extends out and then DOWN. Sure would make life easier.

and...I have 2.5% tint. i read your thread a couple times when I was looking in to mounting a screen in a ZJ. I like the idea of yours....but i already had that flip up screen & two 12's & a amp left over from my XJ when I sold it. i HAD to find a way to mount the screen in there....it just took some time and though to do it. |

flip up head unit sounds cooler then flip down. you don't want negative words in a item it doesn't sound as pleasing to the potential buyer.

So they should simply call it a "fold out screen" or a "flip out screen", without using the word "down" in the name.

the older zj you could mount a flip out easily it did not hang out as much as the 96-98 i had one and i just trimmed the dash pad and then glassed over it and it looked pretty damn good
