Project Canadian Boost Transmission Rebuild 46RE
Well,,, I pulled the motor and transmission and while the motor is being built to a 408,,,, I figured I would rebuild the transmission to hold the power. Now before you say,,, why did you not just go to a built transmission from Martin or one of the other builders..... well shipping would kill me and at the time the buck was like 80 cents ( now alot better but this has already started )
So I went with a Mopar Hi Performance kit ( raysbestos blues ) .... and talked my ear off with Wayne from APS who put a package together. My son works for the local Mopar dealership and I have the trany guy from there going to help us put the thing back together. ( plus he will redo the OD unit ) So here it is so far: ![]() ![]() Transmission and valve body ![]() New clutchs HP ![]() Transgo Rev 3 Reprograming Kit ![]() Goodies for kit from APS ![]() No flip Servo ![]() High Power spring for OD unit Now I was able to get a Front Drum from a 48RE Diesel so I upgraded all internals to steel 5 or 6 pinion gear sets ![]() Front Planetary ![]() Rear Planetary ![]() OD Planetary and other parts I will post up some more items later and show some of the rebuild. Tim

Looks like fun! Mine was for sure. Did you pick up a manual valve so you can have it pumping in park? Doing the OD spring is not too bad. Make yourself a tool from 4" exhaust pipe, and notch it so you can get some snap ring pliers in there. Start to finish in 10 minutes.

Wait... what... you can rebuild these yourself?
Nah, kidding. Good luck. I would if I could. But transmissions are the one thing my dad is not comfortable with. No book to refer to. special tools sometimes needed. Otherwise I would just get the valve body and TC from Martin and get the rest here. How much did all that cost, if you dont mind me asking?

Too Much LOL,,, but a normal HP rebuild from most builders will not include the hard parts that I am putting in,, IE: All planatarys have been replaced with STEEL ( not stock aluminum ) 5 and 6 pinion gear sets and I have now a 48RE front drum so more cost there. So in a nutshell it is a 48RE in a 46RE shell with a much upgraded valve body.
I was going to just get a rebuild from MS but i like a challenge and at the time the US to Canadian exchange was like 80 cents on the dollar and also the shipping across the boarder ,, then getting the casting back to the builder. I have other vehicles to drive so I am in no real hurry. |

Well it has been too long for an update ( family stuff in way ) So I got to doing the Valve body with upgrades from APS. I tried to get this done before I left for a week long business trip to Las Vegas ( so my son and his transmission guy could have it done while away ,,, but nope it is not done yet )
Anyhow It got late into the night so the pics are not all steps,,, but this gives you the general Idea........... Don't do it if your hung over or in a hurry. ![]() Use this kit for the 46RE ![]() And a few extra parts from APS Performance ![]() Valve Body ( with park rod still attached as the OD is off it ) ![]() Getting Rooster Comb off ( watch the spring and ball ) ![]() First Drill,,,, and the APS HP Switch Valve. ![]() New 1-2 Governor Valve ![]() File a groove across this part ( has to do with fluid movement in Park, i think ) ![]() APS No Buzz Pressure Regulator ![]() Drill Accumulator Housing ![]() Plug Accumulator Housing ![]() 3 new Red springs to replace BROKEN original spring for Accumulator ![]() Mods to lower body include one plug and a new limit bushing with white spring Sorry I forgot to take pics of drilling of New Plate that comes in kit but it is where you tell it how hard to shift from 1-2 and 2-3. ( I went about middle of road on this ) ![]() Then you make sure it's all clean ( used Brake cleaner and Air ) and start putting it back together ( don't loose the ONE steel ball under the center part with all the plastic balls ) ![]() The Valve body back together. ![]() Oh I also picked up the B & M Aluminum deep pan ( so I can have a drain and a temp gauge ) That's it for now,,, hoping to get the rest of Transmission together this week........ ( hopefully with a few pics ) |

I got lost in the maze on the VB... better you and me for doing that task, I know it would make more sense in person, but DAMN that looks confusing as heck.
Can't wait to see you get this puppy together and on the dyno/track |

Very nice! I'm excited to see this in action. This built tranny will be the only thing you have on Ben (5.9_Racer) until he sends his in to Martin Saine for a rebuild/upgrade with all the tweaks. Nice to see you did it yourself though. I forget, but what stall did you use?

It's a 2800 stall built by SMR in Canada.... got it slightly used from the guy that built my short block.
Watch my other thread on motor build..... http://thespeedfreaks.net/showthread.php?t=3223 as it should be running today ( I hope ) I am sure Ben will be happy with a MS transmission........... I think if I was to do it over I would have gone that route LOL. Last edited by NoTime; 07-11-2010 at 04:51 AM. |

Ya the 2800 I got for nothing so ,,, I can always upgrade..... I will watch how yours goes for you
![]() Tim Trans runs great so far,,,, had to play with adding more ATF-4 to get it to right level. Temp gauge shows 180 F so far and it was really hot today. I will report back after a few days on how it's all working |
