Get Vista 64-bit and at least 4gb of ram and at least 2gHz Core 2.
My laptop that I bought a year ago for $650 has this, and it really flies. |

get a panasonic toughbook.... and forget vista, its a piece... toughbooks are so awesome... mine has survived numerous droppings, and i take it in the shower with me frequently so i can not miss my chat windows and bid on auctions at the last moment... it has also been accidently left in the rain several times. and flew off a friends motorcycle, and sat in a puddle in the ditch at the side of the road for a week until we found it.. scuffed up but still working flawlessly.

lol @ people condemning vista. and fwiw - even if you DO hate vista, get it in a new laptop. that way, you get a free/cheap upgrade to windows 7 and vista hate nutswinger = teh lose.

Have been running vista since 03/07. Works great.
Granted I am running 64-bit. And btw Lenovo notebooks, have the highest graded of military standard for civilian notebooks. Spill resistant(has as sensor that shuts down the notebook when liquid is detected to prevent damage) - had a doctro spill glass of white wine all over the keyboard, waited 24hrs, reset it and it works til this day. Shock protected, drop protected(built in accelerometer that stops the hard drive to prevent damage) Toughbook is great, but a severe overkill, plus it costs like a 5.9 with 90k miles. I have dropped my Lenovos form 6' shelf twice. They still work like new. And if you read Laptop magazine, they always come on top in almost every category except gaming. Is the Lenovo intrinsically safe? Can they handle dirt / be cleaned off? I'm actually asking because of work conditions...not trying to rip on them. Would like an alternative to toughbooks if there is one.

Somewhat.
US military gave them "semi-rugged" definition. There's a whole article about it. http://hothardware.com/News/Lenovo-T...ed-SemiRugged/ Check it out. Laptop that I have is listed as one of them, the T500 |

She can send me the check, it will be $545 + WA state tax.
I will ship it to her for free. It is brand new in the box directly from the manufacturer. I am not making any money on this, it is nice to be able to pass on company discount. If you want one as well let me know, I might be able to get it a little bit cheaper if I order two. |
