    Turbo Selection Help

Working on a Turbo build for my uncles 3.9 Dakota. This will be my first turbo build, have some books on the subject and read through them, went through a couple of equations. Now I'm looking at compressor maps. I can't find any on the Holset H1C, I was hopping to do this on a budget and get one off a diesel, if it will work.

So far I have a PR and a MFR to plot on the compressor maps. If I can find the compressor map for the H1C and it will work, whats next?

Horsepower goal is 250hp, 3.9 was rated at 125hp and 195lb-ft with the throttle body injection.

Get an eBay turbo if your looking for a budget. They're good turbos and if the seals go bad, rebuild them with quality parts and it'll last you a long time.

Using a diesel turbo won't really work, especially on that tiny engine. You have to think, say you get a turbo off a 5.9L diesel, that diesel is probably 20:1 compression, so its moving a lot of exhaust to spin that thing up. That little 3.9L probably wouldn't see full spool til probably 6k rpms.

I don't know much about turbo sizing, but, I'd stay on the smaller side for more fun and quicker spool. A 20g is a large turbo used on fully built 2.6L Mitsus all the time that doesn't spool til high RPMs...would probably be a good sized turbo for a 3.9L.

But, my recommendation would be to look over the dakota forums, those guys do this all the time, so you can learn from some peoples experiences.

Found a guy on dodge forum that used an H1C on a 5.2 Dakota. I'm looking at using a smaller 12 cm turbine housing.

I would suggest you look at Turbo Buick forums and find the Maps for their stock turbos. We are talking about the same flows/power that you are looking for. With a proven package and internal wastegate for simplicity.

Here is one that may need a rebuild...
