"My musclegirl" - ZJ 5.9 project

Bought her last year @84k miles...

    Here's my project's outline

    Things done:
    -Installed K&N Cold intake system
    -Rebuilt front suspension
    -Rebuilt front axle
-Converted front drive shaft from CV to U-joint. - no vibration atlast.
-Installed Drilled and slotted nickel coated rotors
-16" Black "TUFF" rims and GoodYear Wrangler Silent armors

    Things to do:
-New engine, with ported heads, and more agressive cam. Also thinking about 408 stroker.
    -ECU reprogramming
-M1 Performance mopar intake maniford, BBK throttle body. Already ordered -
-Kolak's 3" exhaust with Doug Thorley headers. Already ordered -

The pics with the black rims are recent ones

Right now im waiting for the headers and kolak's 3" exhaust, M1 intake manifold, bbk throttle body
and oxygen sensors. I was planning to get a stock crate engine and have them port the heads.
But I'm actually considering getting a stroker 408 it would cost me $3250... I'm just wondering
how much more mods would i have to do to the drive train in order for it to be able to withstand
    the power increase... Any ideas?

Welcome. You'll need a built trans for a 408. Hell IMO you need one now.

Hah thanks! But what does "built" mean? lol

Spoke to Kolak and he has those mods done to his car xcept porting heads and cam.
And he didnt do anything to the tranny.

Now with the 408 variant i suspected some reinforcements will be required but
how do i go about doing them?

    Welcome to the site!

ya sadly our trannys aren't that great to begin with. Sometimes they last, sometimes they don't That doesn't mean it will disintegrate behind a 408 but it is putting a lot more wear and tear on it and it's likely to go sooner.

Martin Saine in our vendor section builds awesome transmission. He'd be the one to talk to.

For the ECU (PCM in Jeep lingo) you want SCT and you want none other than flyinryan. also in our vendors section. There's others out there but he has the most satisfied customers - by far!

Thanks hehe . Well I'm more and more leaning to getting regular 5.9 crate engine not a 408... lol
    http://www.hiperformer.com/engines/j..._360rlb_3.html
Thats the company im planning to use... The reason why im changing out the engine is the messed
up last cam bushing that causes low oil pressure on one or two of the lifters that are noisy and when
i dont add lucas to the oil its misfiring on one cylinder. To repair it would cost me almost as much as
that crate engine so i prefer to just replace it...

    What Kevin said ^

From Martin - or anyone else (not that I'd use anyone else) you'll find there's no set price on that stuff. It depends on how far you want to take it and what your needs are.

If the tranny alone is the deciding factor in whether you go with a built 360 or 408, I'd be tempted to say go 408 for now, start saving some money for a Martin Saine tranny and don't wail on your trans in the meantime - although it might be kinda hard keeping off the skinny pedal with a new 408 in there, LOL

Martin makes torque converters to whatever specs you want and he does killer valve bodies too - lots of options there.

From there you can get pretty carried away on a tranny build depending on whether you just want it 'better' or you want it 'killer'. There's upgrades, billet parts, planetaries with more idlers, and replacing the 46 parts with 48 parts, etc - talk to Martin and give him your specs and it's intended use and he'll tell you what you need, and more importantly what you probably don't need.

I know he sells his TCs and VBs by themselves, but being that he's a builder I'm not sure if he sells rebuild kits or not. He very well might but I'm not sure.

Shipping a tranny isn't cheap, but I think you'll be a lot happier if you have him build the box for you

yeah, he sells valve bodies and converters, and can rebuild a trans for you. shipping isnt too cheap, but when i had mine done locally by a "trusted" shop, with a discount because of where i worked it was a HUGE hassle. didnt save me much money, either. for an extra couple hundred martin can build you a trans that will last you a lifetime.

Had a long break (financial break hehe) I'm starting on my project in the end of march. Gotta talk to the engine guys and decide what I need in that engine. I have learned
that the cheapest 408 stroker I can get, is for $3500, so now I gotta see what other mods (heads, cam, roller rockers etc...) will be the best for the least hehe .
After I figure out what engine will it be, I gotta contact Martin to see what kind of tranny do I need. After that I will need a PCM but that later . Rear axle rebuild,
and new stronger drive shaft... Then its time for interior, I plan to redo it in black/red leather. Plan of the game set now I need to gather the money .

Everything from Kolak is already waiting, mopar intake manifold, bbk throttle body, doug thorley headers with the whole 3" exhaust. :P

I will post the progress pics as it goes

How much power are you looking for? As Ryan said, you can get a decent amount of power for a .30 (or was it .60?) over rebuild, at a MUCH lower cost.

If you do go the stroker route remember to grab a 5.2 flex plate and aftermarket (or stock 5.2) harmonic balancer, as the stroker builds change it from external to internal or 'neutral' balance. You can buy aftermarket balancers (even SFI approved ones) in either external or internal but AFAIK no one makes an aftermarket flexplate with the window wheels we need for our EFI

Thanks for the tip, so final thoughts on what i should go with, best option money not an issue here,
as far as the balancer, flex plate is pretty much one option from what I understand.

That's just calipers and rotors... it's not a complete kit: http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/Bra...front+spindles

If you haven't already, you should look at Vanco: http://www.shop.blackmagicbrakes.com...er-BBK-O17.htm

This will give you a 13.25" disk (if you have 17"+ wheels) vs. 12.19" Wilwood disk, and comes with the knuckles you need and full kit for ~$1500. Maybe not as sexy as Wilwood, but with a significantly larger disk should stop better. They use Ford size rotors and calipers, so you could add something sexier to their kit if that matters to you. They also have kits for 16" wheels for less $.

When my budget allows I'm going for the 17" kit... gotta finish making it go fast before I'll worry about stopping.

Well, everything will be modified... so you are saying that stock pcm will do the trick? When I'm gonna be throwing
probably close to 10k into that car, I should get cheap on a pcm??? I admit I have no experience modding cars
whatsoever, but I want this car to be close to or over 500hp. Hell, maybe more LOL
