Haha I was the one who took the video, one of comptiger's friends. I agree with above comments completely needs much more skinny pedal!!

Old ass video of mine, 2006 I think. Nothin to brag about, but it turns out that the parking lot was for the new city hall for the township we were in.

I wasn't pushing it too hard, as the lot wasn't very big. However, we found a much bigger one that we'll test out during the next good snow (should be pretty soon up here in Rochester). Should get some much better ones then.

BTW, first vid is in 2wd, 2nd vid is in 4PT.

there not to to bad theres certain areas that are the equivelent of going rock climbing then others that are perfect, thats one thing that sucks about the roads you have to be careful when messing around because you dont know if there be a random pot hole.....

summer blows because no matter where you are in chicopee theres always road work being done always.......

massholes ftw!!

The roads at home in CT are pretty bad too. There's one corner that I typically take at about 35mph. At that speed, I have to account for about a foot of outwards drift due to the Jeep "sliding" outwards as the solid axles bounce over the chewed up pavement.

Okay, yeah... In chicopee its like dodging craters some times. I wouldnt even drive my Jeep more than 15-20 on many roads there

Can't help but crack up every time I read this thread.

Rob: "How was that drift, I got pretty sideways there"
Me: "Ehh maybe like it wasnt enough of a drift you need more skinny pedal"
Rob: " Yeah but you gotta admit I dont need to floor it..." annnnd cue explanation of 5.9 low end torque leading to a one-sided conversation about how mine couldn't do ^^ 'that' without a bunch of revs and how I should tear it apart and build it up

In time... Patience young grasshopper. Meanwhile both can do perfectly respectable drifts in this snow. And I think for your drifts more momentum going into the drift will make it 100x better

AHHH hahahaha I love the bar you guys set for him. I actually wasn't on this trip so I can't pass judgement. When my license probation period expires I might do some stuff in my WJ. XJ I could haul ass with drifts cause its so light. Anyone ever seen the "Jeeps Like Snow" video on youtube with the XJ pulling some sweet rips in the snow?

As of now though, looks like Rob's Jeep is disabled for another 12+ hours until we find out what went wrong with his alternator. I didnt take a look at it till he drove 2 miles home and pulling into the lot the thing reeked from the end of the lot. Burning electronics is all I could think about.

From what he told me the alt stalled and volts went to 12 then at one point the gauge zero'ed out, then on the way back if he gave it revs it was whining like a baby and such. I say pull the alternator, pull apart and clean everything then bring to auto store to test, but he doesnt wanna pull it, he wants to fire it up then if it still has problems drench it in electronics cleaner and let it dry and fire it up. What do you guys vote?

Yeahh and ummm meanwhile no complaints out of my 4.0 *erhem* *cough* RELIABILTY *cough*

comptiger5000
01-13-2011, 04:39 AM
I'm going to blow it out with cleaner before I start it, otherwise whatever dirt caused it to short might still be in there. BTW, as far as "Reliability", other than the pulley, and mine being tweaked for 150 amps rather than 136, your Jeep uses the same alternator.

I figure if the alt behaves the way it should when I fire the Jeep up, then it's probably working fine, and I just need to keep an eye on it. If it doesn't seem right, then it's time to have it tested, and possibly rebuilt.

As far as donuts, I'm not terribly practiced at AWD donuts, so the couple of ones I tried to pull (only one is on video, I think) weren't very good.

come to a stop. crank your wheel all the way left or right. romp on the gas pedal. enjoy the perfect circle that you will create :D

comptiger5000
01-13-2011, 09:18 AM
I tried that (not on the videos though), but I gassed it too hard and broke off into a 4 wheel drift. I can do 2wd donuts (although I didn't do any in the videos), but 4wd ones (particularly zero axis) seem much tougher. Of course, being that I'm pretty sure I fried my alternator, the Jeep is out of commission for a while.

I just went and rinsed the alt out with WD-40, as a suggestion I found on another forum after getting it wet. Didn't make a difference, still low voltage, loud whine, and lots of heat. I'll try the electronics cleaner later, and if that doesn't help, then it's rebuild time. Gotta get parts though, so it'll probably be sometime next week before she's up and running again.

Rob, the pedal you need is the little one on the right next to the trans tunnel. Keep in mind, the inside of the Jeep will get louder when you put it on the floor.

I'm not trying to take shots at him, we hang out prettttyyyy much every day, get along great, and I'm rooming with him and two other kids in an apartment next year. Imagine that, two Jeep addicts we're going to be completely unproductive and just work on our Jeeps all day.\

Edit: and can somebody please help me out here, I'm trying to convince Rob to leave his Jeep in 4wd more often. One time we went out in a blizzard ground completely covered in snow. I asked for 4wd but he refused. We slid out in an intersection then only after fishtailing up a hill did we go into 4wd. I'm a firm believer of being in 4wd as a precaution

comptiger5000
01-17-2011, 10:38 AM
I did not spin out. I hit an ice patch in the hardpack, and got about a 90* snap from the rear end, which I had no trouble recovering from. It would have done exactly the same in 4wd, as I wasn't exactly on the gas much (just enough to maintain 5mph), but it was simply glare ice, under a little bit of snow. When we hit that hill, I started to spin a little (although it would still have climbed it), and that's when I determined that road needed 4wd.

I am a firm believer in the "in in 2, out in 4" theory, and 2wd also gives a far better feel for how much traction there is. I've never had a time when I couldn't control the Jeep, and if I do lose the rear end, unless I've got A LOT of empty space around me, I'd rather be in 2wd than 4wd as far as control.

How do you think the Mustangs and such on campus get around? They're probably worse in snow than a ZJ in 2wd, especially seeing the tires most of them run.

compcrasher86
01-17-2011, 10:40 AM
How do you think the Mustangs and such on campus get around? They're probably worse in snow than a ZJ in 2wd, especially seeing the tires most of them run.

lol they dont, havent seen a single one on the road in this snow

comptiger5000
01-17-2011, 11:05 AM
I saw one of the Mustangs driving around in the aftermath of the snowstorm.

Keep in mind, you can't really talk, as with the 247, unless you're actively spinning the rear tires, you're in 2wd (unless in 4lo).

compcrasher86
01-17-2011, 12:05 PM
yupp and then in fractions of a second its in 4wd, especially seeing as you enjoy powering out of turns would it not be beneficial to you to have a little bit of grab power up front to keep the rear under control?

Now what Jeep REALLY needs to do is make a 247-242 hybrid case

It would have 2wd, 4parttime with shafts locked, 4alltime that functioned like the 247, and low range shafts locked

comptiger5000
01-17-2011, 12:14 PM
Having the 247 kick power forward on slip doesn't help much once the rear end starts to go. Plus, I only power turns very lightly in the snow, not like I do on dry pavement.

They just need to take a 242 and shove a trac-lok or a VC in the diff used for 4FT, so it's 50/50 limited slip like an early 249.

If I power through a turn in 4FT, the results are a bit unpredictable with the open center. In 4PT, it tends to brake all 4 loose and slide outwards, which is much worse than a little occasional rear end slide. In deeper snow or really slick stuff where I'm sliding regardless, then 4PT is good.

compcrasher86
01-17-2011, 12:49 PM
I <3 4PT from my XJ. Man with a light vehicle and driveshafts locked I would power slide through every turn I made! Reverse the steering wheel and give some power and it would yank out of every drift. 4 wheel drifts feel much more controlled cause as you pull the front end it helps straighten the rear

comptiger5000
01-17-2011, 01:24 PM
Have you ever drifted in 2wd? RWD drifts are perfectly controlled if you know how to handle them.
